DESCRIPTION

Within the Department of Medicine at UCSD, the Center on Gender Equity and Health (GEH) focuses on conducting innovative global public health research, medical and academic training, and evidence-based intervention development and evaluation of programs related to gender inequities, gender-based violence, and sexual and reproductive health (adolescent and unintended pregnancy, family planning, HIV/STI, healthy birth spacing). The team of social science and epidemiology researchers assembled by GEH includes leading figures in measurement and rigorous evaluation of sustainable programs working with girls, young women, their male partners and their families to understand and change gender-based behaviors and social norms that compromise health and safety. GEH currently has ongoing research in South Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the United States. This research is supported by a diverse portfolio of public and private funders, conducted in conjunction with international NGOs, and includes engagement with local and national governments.

Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and the Research Project Manager, the Project Coordinator is responsible for the coordination and implementation of projects focused on scale-up, monitoring and evaluation, and networking and capacity building (professional learning networks). Current projects cover the topics of social and gender norms, very young adolescents, sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, and violence against children. Projects are based in West, Central, and East Africa. The individual will assist the team in data collection, analysis and preparation for public dissemination and communications activities.

This position is responsible for the coordination and close monitoring of research projects from GEH's San Diego office. Specific tasks include project meeting support, coordinating project management processes, scheduling meetings, sending meeting notes and agendas, contributing to project documents and deliverables, and coordinating large virtual and in-person events, assisting with literature and scoping reviews, working with in-country partners, and preparing results from research projects for external sharing via PowerPoint, manuscript preparation, and large reports. As such, writing, editing and management skills are essential components of this position. They will spend significant time assisting with contracts and agreements with external partners and may also provide coordination support to GEH as a center.

On occasion, this position may require local, national and/or international travel, with Principal Investigators and/or Research Project Manager to visit study sites and/or study partners for the purposes of planning, data collection and/or dissemination.

Applies professional concepts to conduct analytical studies or projects of moderate scope and complexity to address a variety of policy, research and procedural issues. Fully analyzes issues and problems, gathers data and information, finds and evaluates alternatives and makes sound recommendations.

Coordinates program planning and collaboration with program / project staff. Works with project leaders to coordinate research activities, procurement and operation of instrumentation, infrastructure and required field research commodities. Provides routine project meeting support, including scheduling, preparing agendas, taking and disseminating meeting notes and follow up with partners and team members on action items. Processes partner and subaward invoices, manages budgets, and ensures the project is following fiscal guidelines with funders along with project and finance manager.

Participates in administrative / research policy and program project planning and development. Supports team to establish procedures, logistics. Assists with development of study protocols. Helps to ensure routine project processes run smoothly by facilitating regular project communications, tracking work planning and reporting processes and deadlines.

Prepares, edits and modifies documents including research reports, manuscripts, presentations and proposals. Contributes to the drafting of project reports, presentations, briefs, graphics, journal articles, and other documents; edits and formats project documents; and helps maintain the organization of project documents in project folders. Updates project pages as needed and assists in project dissemination and communications materials.
Percent

Using subject matter knowledge, collects and prepares information for use in discussions, meetings of internal and external constituents. Coordinates large virtual and in-person events by managing invitation lists, monitoring Zoom functions, hosting breakout sessions, and assisting with meeting follow up and dissemination of notes and meeting recordings.

On a project basis, performs analytical studies on a variety of policies, research initiatives, programs and issues. Assists with background research and literature review to support researchers. Provides research support to the projects including desk reviews, coordinating key informant interviews (scheduling, notes, analysis), drafting and cleaning case studies and project briefs, formatting and managing citation reference libraries, and assisting with the collection, entry, management, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data as requested by supervisors.

Provides a variety of analytical duties in support of a function, research initiative, program and / or organizational unit. Provides recommendations and guidelines involving programs / initiatives. Applies professional or research concepts to perform analysis of data and systems pertaining to moderately complex projects, policies, initiatives, / processes, and / or functions. Gathers and assembles analytical and factual data on assigned problems and issues to prepare reports and / or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for internal or external constituents.

This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at La Jolla and remote.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Six years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.

  • Working knowledge of common organization- or research-specific and other computer application programs. Extensive computer experience including expertise with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Experience writing for social-behavioral research including study progress reports, peer-reviewed manuscripts, funder reports, grey literature, etc.

  • Proficient in ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

  • Demonstrates ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.

  • Demonstrates ability to analyze, research and synthesize large amounts of data with strong attention to detail.

  • Proficient in ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Ability to work in ambiguous conditions. Ability to be flexible to shifting project priorities and PI needs.

  • Working knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.

  • Ability to coordinate/participate in calls outside of normal working hours/multiple time zones, as needed, due to international collaborations.

  • Working knowledge of applicable socio-behavioral research, techniques, and human research subjects protections.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Masters degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training preferred.

  • Written and conversational proficiency in French.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
