About the Department

The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers undergraduate degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Graduate programs are offered with specialties in Computing and Systems, Construction Engineering, Water Resources, Coastal and Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, Transportation Systems and Materials, Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental Engineering, and Mechanics and Materials.

With over 53 faculty, more than 770 undergraduate students and over 300 graduate students, NC State University’s Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) is one of the largest departments in the country and more importantly, one of the best. In 2022, our Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering degrees were ranked at 21st and 26th in the country, respectively.

At the graduate level we offer the traditional Master’s and Ph.D. degrees with the opportunity to specialize in a wide range of topics in civil, construction, and environmental engineering. We are also a leader in distance education. Students can earn a Master of Civil or Environmental Engineering degree without ever setting foot on campus. CCEE’s online Master of Civil Engineering program was ranked No. 4 in the country on US News & World Report’s 2022 Best Online Programs list.

Essential Job Duties

Coastal Hazards Research Specialist

The Coastal Hazards (CHAZ) Research Specialist will play a pivotal role in supporting innovative coastal monitoring programs led by Dr. Anarde. These include:


  • Shoreline Monitoring: Using advanced remote sensing techniques to study shoreline changes along the NC Outer Banks.

  • Chronic Coastal Flooding Monitoring: Utilizing in situ sensors and camera imagery to track and analyze recurrent flooding events.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Project Management: Oversee the execution of coastal monitoring projects, including report writing, presentations, figure creation, and data quality control.

  • Sensor Deployment & Maintenance: Coordinate and organize sensor installations, ensuring proper functionality and data collection.

  • Data Analysis: Conduct initial processing and analysis of geospatial and water level data.

  • Cross-Department Collaboration: Work closely with undergraduate and graduate students in Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as interdisciplinary teams from the Sunny Day Flooding Project.

  • Procurement & Logistics: Manage the purchase of materials and organize the manufacturing of monitoring equipment as needed.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment + 3 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong background in geospatial analysis and remote sensing
  • Background in coastal science or coastal engineering
  • Leadership and mentoring skills
  • Strong English language skills, written & verbal
  • Experience developing and troubleshooting IoT sensors

Preferred Qualifications

This opportunity might suit a recently completed PhD student or a more experienced researcher interested in project management and producing knowledge that will support coastal and roadway management in North Carolina.
