Under the direction of the Organ Allocation Transplant Coordinator, the Organ Allocation Specialist has the responsibility to assist in taking call for the transplant departments (heart, lung, liver, and kidney) at UC San Diego Center for Transplantation. The call responsibilities include but are not limited to assist in reviewing deceased donor organ offers when organs become available to transplant candidates, assist in answering patient calls, assist with UNOS listing status updates, assist in reporting adverse events and culture reporting, assist with urgent transfers, and other duties that may be assigned by the Organ Allocation Transplant Coordinator or Organ Allocation & Transplant Recovery Manager.
The Organ Allocation Specialist assists in facilitating acceptance or refusal of donor organs for transplant and assists in coordinating the organ recovery with the transplant surgeons, medical teams, Organ and Tissue Donation Team, Histocompatibility lab, UCSD hospital teams, (OR, blood bank, admissions, bedside nurses, etc.) and assists in communicating with patient recipients who will be receiving organs. The Organ Allocation Specialist works alongside the Organ Allocation Transplant Coordinator to ensure organ recovery and placement of all feasible organs offered UC San Diego Transplant Center. The Organ Allocation Specialist works as a team and has the responsibility to provide 24/7 coverage on a rotating schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.
The Organ Allocation Specialist is a remote exempt position that may require on campus meetings and trainings.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Five (5) years or more experience in OPO/Transplant Organ Allocation.
- Experience in reviewing deceased donor organ offers and facilitating acceptance or refusal of donor organ offers in DonorNet.
- Experience in assisting with coordination of the transplant recovery process.
Experience in taking 24/7 call on a rotating schedule.
Strong interpersonal skills. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others.
- Advanced knowledge of the clinical and operational implications of transplant/OPO including workflows and processes. Advanced understanding of medical terminology and maintains a broad range of clinical expertise in theory and best practices of transplant/OPO.
- Proven ability to apply knowledge of medical center policies and procedures and related legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.
- Advanced communication skills; includes verbal and written, active listening, critical thinking, persuasiveness, advising and counseling skills.
- Advanced interpersonal skills. Skills to work collaboratively; coordinate and integrate with others throughout the multi-organization(s). Successful experience working with people with a wide range of backgrounds and skills.
- Advanced organizational and complex project management skills. Exceptional customer service, analytical, planning, problem-solving, interpersonal and team-building skills. Ability to effectively persuade and negotiate results in complex situations.
- Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in the Microsoft Suite. Skills in data management. Advanced knowledge of organization's relevant healthcare and clinic operations information technology and medical record review. Ability to teach others.
- Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.
- Maintain valid licenses and required certificates that were valid on date of hire (i.e. LVN, Paramedic, Respiratory Therapist, Emergency Medical Technician).

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $99,138 - $144,448 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $47.48 - $69.18
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
