Human Resources and DEI Manager
Job Description
SPW’s HR & DEI Manager guides the organization’s employee relations and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives. This manager will serve as the lead on most of the organization’s HR functions, ensuring compliance with federal and state employment regulations while building a positive employee experience. They will approach Human Resources from an equity impact perspective, working to ensure that employees are supported with the understanding that external racial equity goals are impossible without an ongoing commitment to addressing and dismantling racial inequities as an organization. As such, this manager will support and implement the organization’s internal racial and other equity initiatives and strategy.
Responsibilities
Regular responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Hiring
- Draft & implement recruiting & hiring strategies to attract employees from diverse backgrounds
- Support hiring managers in the hiring process by developing job descriptions, posting openings, assisting with interviews, and making hiring recommendations
- Onboard new staff through new employee orientation & benefits enrollment, and thoroughly offboard departing employees
Benefits & Compensation
- Research and coordinate benefits and accommodations with oversight of Deputy Director
- Research, develop, recommend, and execute creative strategies to improve compensation, benefits, promotion, retention, and other employee resources
- Prepare bi-weekly payroll - works with Staff Accountant to make and record payroll adjustments as needed
Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion
- Researches, develops, recommends, and executes creative strategies to foster the organization’s DEI goals
- Reviews and updates current practices & policies, assessing & analyzing the extent to which they support or hinder the organization’s DEI goals
- Hold staff and organization accountable to employing an equity and inclusion lens in our work and professional relationships. Be available for consultation and answer questions raised by staff related to race and other equity opportunities.
- Interview, survey, and meet with staff to make recommendations around organizational culture and inclusion.
Employee Support & Performance
- Investigate and mediate employee grievances and concerns
- Provides guidance to supervisory staff in developing objective performance standards and providing ongoing performance coaching
- Supports supervisors in conducting 60-90 day & annual staff performance evaluations and standardizes performance-related wage increases
- Update, conduct, analyze, and present results from regular employee engagement and demographic surveys
- Support and encourage internal and regional racial equity caucuses, our internal “lived experience” caucus, and any other employee resource groups
- Assist with planning & organizing annual staff appreciation and engagement events
- Identify and coordinate professional development opportunities to meet staff and organizational needs
Compliance
- Research and recommend Human Resources Information System - works with Deputy Director to set up and maintain
- Maintain current knowledge and communicate industry and legal changes and best practices related to human resources and DEI. When necessary, provide training & policy updates to staff to ensure legal compliance.
- Administer unemployment, L&I claims, and all other benefit-related programs governed by employment/labor laws
- Maintain budget of approximately $100,000 to support professional development, recruitment and retention, HR software, and other related consultants
- Ensure that employee handbooks, position manuals, and all HR-related policies & procedures are reviewed and updated regularly
Required Qualifications
- At least 3 years of Human Resources required with at least 2 years working towards racial justice, anti-racism, and/or social justice issues
- Knowledge of racial equity literature, frameworks, and practice.
- Excellent verbal & written communication skills, including proven dispute resolution skills
- Thorough understanding of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
- Ability to work effectively in an organization that has recognized its own issues related to equity, and is seeking to be more representative of the community it serves
- Ability to work effectively with partners who are diverse with respect to age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, nationality, religion, culture, and lived experience
- Ability to compose reports, correspondence, proposals, and other business documents for dissemination to internal staff and/or to outside contacts
- Strong mentoring and coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of experience
- Intermediate expertise in Microsoft Office and Google Drive
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Willingness to commit to the organization for at least 2 years
Preferred Qualifications
- Applicants fluent in Spanish or Indigenous American languages are strongly encouraged to apply
- At least 1 year experience working with a Human Resources Information System
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP preferred
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
Reports to: Deputy Director
Supervision Responsibilities: Contractors performing Human Resources and/or DEI services
Travel: less than 5% of the time. This is a remote position that will be expected to travel to Arizona twice per year for several days at a time.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
